The Hardest Junctions Around Tolworth Test Centre

4 min read · Kings Driving Centre, Tolworth

Tolworth driving test centre is at Douglas House, 1B Douglas Road, Tolworth KT6 7RZ. Test routes vary, but a handful of junctions come up again and again in our lessons because they combine speed, lanes and decisions in one place. Here is how to handle them.

Tolworth Roundabout

The defining junction of this test centre: a large, busy, multi-lane roundabout sitting beneath the A3, where the A240 Kingston Road and Ewell Road meet. The difficulty is not the roundabout itself but the lane choice on the approach.

  • Read the signs and road markings early, and pick your lane well before the give-way line.
  • Once in a lane, hold it. Drifting between lanes on the roundabout is one of the most common serious faults here.
  • Check your mirrors and signal in good time before your exit, and watch for vehicles on your inside.

Joining and leaving the A3

The A3 is fast dual carriageway, and the slip roads give you a short distance to match your speed to traffic. Hesitating at the end of a slip road is as dangerous as joining too aggressively.

Build speed on the slip road, check your mirror and blind spot, and merge into a safe gap. When leaving, move into the left lane in good time and slow down on the slip road, not on the carriageway.

Hook Rise and the Hook underpass

The roads running alongside the A3 at Hook combine merging traffic, lane changes and a busy junction in a short stretch. Lane discipline and confident, well-timed merging are what get tested here. Look well ahead so you are not making late lane changes.

Ewell Road and Tolworth Broadway

Slower, but full of decisions: parked cars, buses pulling out, pedestrians, deliveries and side roads. Examiners watch how you plan. Keep a safe distance, anticipate buses moving off, and give priority clearly when meeting oncoming traffic between parked cars.

The residential streets

The quiet streets around Red Lion Road and the surrounding estates are where manoeuvres usually happen, and where observation at junctions gets tested hardest. Some junctions have limited visibility because of parked cars. Creep and peep: edge forward slowly until you can see properly, then decide.

Watch out

Not making effective observations at junctions is the most common reason for failing the driving test nationally. Quiet roads make learners relax, and that is exactly when it happens.

How we prepare you

We drive each of these junctions with you until they feel ordinary, at different times of day, and then put them together on a mock test so you have handled all of them under test conditions before the real thing.
