Intensive course or weekly lessons — which is which?
These are two different products, and the price per hour is not the same. Here is the honest difference.
Weekly lessons
From £37 per hour
- 1–2 hours a week, fitted around your life
- Typically 6–12 months from start to test
- You book your own theory and practical test
- Block packages: 10 hours £370 · 20 hours £730 · 30+ hours £1,050
- Best if you are nervous, busy, or want time to absorb between lessons
Intensive course
From £50 per hour
- Several hours a day, days or weeks rather than months
- Your instructor blocks out whole days for you alone
- Structured daily plan, mock test on live examiner routes
- We help you find and secure a test slot at Tolworth or Morden
- Optional £150 test cover: our dual-controlled car on test day
Why intensive costs more per hour: your instructor gives up whole days and cannot teach other pupils in that time, and the course includes planning, mock testing and test-slot help that weekly lessons do not. You pay more per hour, but you are usually driving legally months sooner.
Intensive course questions
How many hours do I actually need?
It depends almost entirely on how much time you have already spent driving. A complete beginner usually needs around 30 hours or more with us; someone who has had lessons before often needs 20; a returning licence holder may need only 10. The figure commonly quoted from DVSA research is around 45 hours of professional tuition for the average learner. We would rather assess you first and recommend fewer hours than sell you a package you do not need.
Why is an intensive course dearer per hour than weekly lessons?
Because your instructor sets aside whole days for you and cannot teach anyone else in that time, and because the course includes a structured plan, a mock test on live examiner routes, and help securing a test slot. Weekly block lessons start at about £37 an hour; intensive courses from about £50. What you buy with the difference is time — most intensive pupils are driving legally months earlier.
What does £150 test cover include?
We provide the dual-controlled car for your practical test at Tolworth (KT6 7RZ) or Morden (SM4 4PE), fully insured for the test, plus a warm-up drive on the morning so you arrive already settled. It does not include the DVSA test fee itself, which you pay directly to the DVSA when booking.
How quickly can I get a test date?
This is the honest constraint on every intensive course: your course length is set by us, but your test date is set by DVSA availability, which varies month to month. We will check current waiting times at Tolworth and Morden before you commit, and we watch for cancellations. Book your theory test early — you cannot sit the practical without it.
Should I learn automatic or manual?
An automatic licence only lets you drive automatics; a manual licence covers both. But automatics remove clutch control and stalling from the equation, which for many learners means fewer hours overall and a calmer test. If you are anxious, short on time, or expect to drive an automatic or electric car anyway, automatic is often the better decision rather than the easier one.
Is an intensive course right for everyone?
No, and we will tell you if it is not. Intensive courses suit people who learn well under concentrated practice and can commit whole days. If you are a nervous driver or can only manage an hour here and there, weekly lessons usually produce a better driver for the same money. Ask us and we will say honestly which fits you.
